Invisalign to fix crooked teeth – The newest way to correct dental misalignments

Most children get saddled with retainers very early on in life and then have to wear them every single night for several months to make sure that their permanent teeth grow out the right way. While this nightly ritual is no doubt annoying, it does effectively prevent dental misalignments that could become very visible later in life. Children who were not “gifted” with retainers can either spend the rest of their lives looking at their crooked smiles in their mirrors or wear braces which come with a whole lot of painful and aesthetic inconveniences. My college friend Adam was one of those children who grew up without retainers and with several crooked teeth. Later in his life, after he became an adult and a management consultant by profession, he discovered that a bright and symmetrical smile could be very helpful for breaking the ice with new clients. “Nobody tells me to my face but I can definitely see a difference in how clients react to my colleague when he talks with them with his perfectly aligned teeth. Everything about his face looks great and clients gladly focus on the words he is saying. With me, at least part, if not all, of their attention never moves past my crooked front teeth.” To fix this little problem, Adam decided to finally put his misaligned teeth into their correct places. Alright then – off to the dentist.

What is Invisalign?

The closer we came to the dental practice, the more nervous Adam became and started to imagine increasingly unrealistic, yet scary, horror scenarios about braces: “Listen, these things are made out of metal and are then attached to the teeth with steel wires. The whole thing just has to be painful. And what if one of the wires tears and ends up scratching up all of the healthy teeth …?” He went on like this for another 30 minutes until we finally arrived at the dentist’s office where the trained professional fortunately completely cleared up all of Adam’s worries. “Don’t worry. Braces are just one option to correct dental misalignments. Given that your teeth are not terribly crooked, a non-invasive Invisalign therapy should work out just fine.” said the dentist and instantly became Adam’s new best friend.

Invisalign is the most cutting edge treatment option for orthodontic conditions and can nowadays be used to correct up to 95% of all possible cases of dental misalignment in adults and teenagers. This modern treatment is an often favored alternative to braces and involves several pairs of reusable splints (so-called “Aligners”) which are custom-made for each individual patient and slowly but certainly coax misaligned teeth into their proper positions. The most frequently cited advantages of Invisalign therapy over conventional braces or retainers are:

* Highly-aesthetic and almost completely invisible splints (Aligners)

* Very gentle on the wearer’s teeth

* High wearing comfort

* Pain-free insertion and wearing

Once a patient decides to go with Invisalign, he or she works closely with a dentist on developing a custom-tailored, individual treatment plan, which usually involves the following steps:

Diagnosis and Planning – Creation of a detailed treatment plan for custom-made, see-through Invisalign Aligners via software support based on patient-specific photos, x-rays, and dental imprints

Invisalign Delivery – A few weeks after the initial diagnosis visit, a patient receives the first pair of transparent Invisalign Aligners which can be worn for up to two weeks at day and at night and which only need to be taken out prior to eating, drinking, or regular dental hygiene

Check-In Visits – After using up the first two-week set of Aligners, a patient can take several Aligner pairs home to cut down the number of dentist visits to one every 6 to 10 weeks

Retention – To preserve the positive end result of the Invisalign therapy, patients receive so-called “retention splints” for longer-term use

In general, an Invisalign treatment last for about one year – however, more complex cases may require longer treatment durations.

“Great! So we’re bidding the braces farewell right away.” said Adam enthusiastically. However, before getting started with the therapy, one last question needed to be answered: “How much will this Invisalign therapy cost?”

How much does Invisalign cost?

“The costs of Invisalign depend on treatment duration and the type of equipment used. In your case, I recommend Invisalign Lite for starters and we can check up on treatment effect 28 weeks later. At that point, if necessary, we can switch over to a full-length Invisalign therapy. Otherwise, I’ll send you home early with a retention retainer.” explained the dentist right before he went into a bit more detail on treatment pricing:

* Treatment Plan and Analysis: € 380

* Invisalign (Adults and Children): € 5,000 all-in price (irrespective of treatment duration)

* Invisalign Lite: € 3,000 all-in price (treatment duration of 28 weeks)

* Retention (e.g., with Vivera Retainer): € 550

Nowadays, several Austrian state insurers already cover a part of Invisalign’s all-in costs in the form of set annual reimbursement amounts ranging from € 300 up to €1,000. The exact reimbursement amount that a given insurer will make for an Invisalign therapy varies on a case-by-case (patient-by-patient) basis. Private insurers pay for Invisalign treatment costs at least partially and sometimes even in full dependent on the exact terms of their insurance contracts with individual patients.

“Hm, this sounds quite expensive. But I only have one smile and if it helps me get even one more new client, the treatment will have paid for itself. Let’s do it.” said Adam and had his dental imprints taken on the very same day. All of this happened about 4 months ago and in roughly 10 weeks, we should know how well Adam’s teeth responded to the Invisalign Lite therapy. Good luck from the DentalAce team, Adam!
