Allergic against brushing teeth

Do you sometimes feel off after brushing your teeth? Do you suffer from allergy symptoms? Then it may not be your imagination playing a trick on you, but rather a real allergic reaction caused by toothpaste because some people struggle with tolerance issues regarding its ingredients (e.g., essences and preservatives). Before we get some more information about how to combat such symptoms, we need to learn a bit more about what actually causes them.

What is a contact allergy inside the mouth?

An allergic reaction is, essentially, an overblown reaction of the human immune system to an usually well-tolerated substances. Inside the mouth, so-called contact allergies occur much less often than on other body parts. Should an allergy occur, it is likely caused by dental care products (e.g., toothpaste) or by certain foods. Contact allergies inside the oral cavity fall into one of the following 3 categories, which are ranked based on their relative catalysts:
  • Dental material: Allergic reaction caused by a material that was used by a dentist during a treatment
  • Food: Allergic reaction caused by the consumption of certain foods
  • Oral hygiene products: Allergic reaction caused by one or more dental care products (e.g., toothpaste)
Clear symptoms of a contact allergy include a torn mucous membrane as well as common gum line inflammations and increased salivation and a burning feeling inside the mouth.

What are the causes of contact allergies inside the mouth?

Main causes are usually allergic reactions following contact with certain dental care materials or certain metals that are used in dental medicine, such as nickel and chrome in orthodontic devices or cobalt in dental prostheses. In very rare cases, even plastic can trigger the onset of such allergic reactions. Some more details:
  • Amalgam: A by now antiquated dental filling material with a very long durability that is found in many people’s mouths. Amalgam fillings are the most frequent causes of locally limited reactions, which is a direct consequence of their high quicksilver content.
  • Gold: Patients who suffer from gold allergy can easily develop symptoms caused by any gold fillings or crowns.
  • Synthetic Material: The by now latest material for dental fillings, which is generally better tolerated and, thus, causes fewer contact allergies than amalgam

How are contact allergies inside the mouth treated?
The main reason for an allergy treatment is to alleviate, or to completely heal, all manifesting symptoms. On top of that, it is always advisable to stop getting into contact with substances that cause allergic reactions. In case of acute allergy symptoms, sucking on ice cubes and applying cortisone cremes is also helpful. If your dental fillings are suspected as the cause for an allergic reaction, you should ask a dentist whether the replacement of these fillings with new ones that are made out of a different material would be beneficial.

Am I allergic against my toothpaste?
In general, allergic reactions to the most frequently used ingredients of toothpaste are quite rare, though they can emerge after contact with certain essences and oils. People who suffer from allergies caused by toothpaste should consult a dentist and a physician who specializes on allergies in order to select or custom make a tolerable toothpaste.

So don’t fret, for there are remedies – even in cases of contact allergies inside your mouth!
