What is dentophobia?

Dentophobia – or the fear of a dental procedure – is nowadays more common among the general population than one might think and can, depending on its severity, lead to serious dental problems such as pain when chewing and even inflamed tooth roots and tooth loss. This is why many people who suffer from dentophobia are desperately looking for a cure.

Since childhood, we are used to regularly brush our teeth and visit the dentist for checkup visits twice every year to make sure that our teeth are healthy. To many of us, this does not seem to be a big deal, but to those of us who suffer from dentophobia, it can easily appear worse than the scariest nightmare.

What are the causes of dentophobia?

A myriad of experiences can cause dentophobia in a person and they can have physical triggers, such as a painful dental treatment, or psychological triggers, such as shame, fear of losing control, and a lack of trust in the dentist. In general, dentophobia is the result of one of the following:

  • Painful dental treatment in the past
  • Poor dental hygiene (and a n accordingly higher treatment need)
  • Unpleasant experiences with dentists and/or dental assistants

What are the effects of dentophobia?

Unfortunately, fear is a very strong emotion and can lead to certain patterns of behavior that can negatively affect the dental health of a patient. For example, people suffering from dentophobia visit a dentist less frequently, which often leads to a deterioration in their oral hygiene habits and makes early detection of potential dental issues very difficult. Therefore, advanced dentophobia usually has one or more of the following consequences:

  • Constant and permanent deterioration of a patient’s dental health
  • Deterioration of a patient’s general health
  • Very high costs associated with the need to address multiple dental issues, which are often not reimbursed by dental insurance
How can you alleviate or beat dentophobia?
In order to beat dentophobia, one should use the very same approach that is recommended for beating any other kind of fear. The first step is to admit to the fear because one can only beat something that has been identified. Afterwards, a detailed examination of the key drivers behind the fear should follow to gain an understanding of what triggered the pain and to then address those triggers. In general, the most frequently applied approaches to combat dentophobia fall into one of the following categories:

How does the treatment of a dentophobia patient work?
  • Book your first appointment: The first step is one of the most important ones in the entire treatment process given that it requires overcoming a high degree of discomfort.
  • Attend your first appointment: At first, the patient is asked to complete a questionnaire to help the dentist optimally prepare for the upcoming appointment. Afterwards, the dentist and his staff take x-ray pictures of the patient's teeth in order to identify, show and talk about the problem at hand. A specially trained dentist attentively listens to the patient and occasionally asks one or more clarifying questions. During the first appointment, the dentist only performs a dental procedure if he or she receives the explicit consent from the patient.
  • Follow-Up Visits: The dentist works together with the patient on compiling a detailed treatment plan and reviews it step by step to ensure that the patient is, at all times, fully informed about next steps. Afterwards, all the patient needs to do is relax and appear to follow-on appointments as his or her dentophobia slowly but surely dissipates and, ultimately, disappears.

So, no need to fret! There are multiple proven ways to successfully address dentophobia!
