What is general anesthesia at the dental office?

Many patients nowadays are scared of the dentist and are looking for a way to get their teeth treated in the most painless and anxiety-free way. An anesthesiologist can help with that and often collaborates with dentists on sedating their patients with carefully dosed sleep medications to make them enter a sleep-like state throughout the dental procedure and allow them to leave the dental office carefree thereafter. This is particularly useful for longer and more complex treatments as well as for more substantial procedures.

Depending on whether an adult or a child needs to be sedated, the specialist opts for either an anesthetic gas for the patient to inhale or for a sleep medication that is administered intravenously. The anesthesiologist monitors the patient’s vital signs throughout the entire treatment and keeps an eye on several monitoring devices (e.g., EKG) to make sure that no emergency occurs. The patient also received additional oxygen via an external oxygen tube that is placed inside his or her trachea while he or she is under general anesthesia. During the procedure, the anesthesiologist can adjust the intensity of sedation via either adding on stopping additional anesthetic gases.

Who needs general anesthesia while at the dentist?

As already mentioned, general anesthesia is a great option for patients who suffer from dentophobia because it makes otherwise problematic and scare treatments bearable. That said, any patient may request general anesthesia during his or her dental procedure, provided the dentist of their choice offers this service.

What are the steps of a dental procedure involving general anesthesia?

First comes an initial consultation with the dentist, which is particularly important for patients with dentophobia, as it involves a careful walk-through of all possible treatment options in a calm and anxiety-free atmosphere. The patient can then decide on the spot whether to proceed to treatment on the same day or whether to return for treatment during a follow-up appointment.

Afterwards comes the treatment itself, which, thanks to the general anesthesia, is not only completely pain-free but also fully unnoticed, given that the administered anesthetic suppresses the patient’s central nervous system during the procedure.

Lastly, one more key point to remember: after the dental procedure is completed, the patient may indeed leave the dental practice right away. However, this may only happen with another person accompanying the patient for safety reasons. Driving on the same day is out of the question for the patient.

How much does general anesthesia cost at the dental office?

The exact costs of general anesthesia depend heavily on the treatment that is performed and should therefore be discussed with the dentist prior to starting any procedure to avoid surprises. In general, patients should expect to pay several hundred Euros (in the range of EUR 200 – 1,500).

In some cases, insurance companies do cover general anesthesia – for example for kids up to the age of 6 of for disabled people. Patients with proven dentophobia can also receive financial help from insurance companies.

So, no need to fret! There are multiple well-known options to successfully apply general anesthesia to address pain and dentophobia!
